Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to understand the residential mobility experiences of elderly people. In this study, special attention has been paid to the changes in social network with residential move and adjustment process of the elderly to these changes. The data for this study were gathered through qualitative research methodology. 11 elderly who have moved within last 5 years were interviewed. This study used personal narratives extracted from these recorded in-depth interviews. We developed typology of adjustment process and identified key themes of elderly people¡¯s experiences of moving and changes in social networks. There are three types of adjustment process of the elderly respondents in this study. Type I is the elderly who more or less maintain the social network of the previous place of residence. Type II is the elderly who developed a new network at a place where they moved to. Type III is the elderly who are disconnected from their previous network and yet have no new networks developed. The elderly who belongs to these different types differ in the duration of residence before the move and also in the level of active participation in social relationships. It was found that personality characteristics and similarity/differences in sociocultural environments between previous residence and current residence influences the adjustment process of the elderly. Various implications of these findings are discussed.
